Product Leadership Search
Chief Product Officer and Head of Product Search, Brisbane
The trigger is usually when product decisions have become too important to sit across founders, engineering and sales without clear ownership. The mistake is hiring a product theorist who runs excellent workshops and struggles to make a hard commercial call.
What a Product Leadership does in a mid-market business
A Chief Product Officer or Head of Product owns what gets built and why: roadmap, pricing and packaging, customer discovery and the commercial outcomes the product is accountable for. In Brisbane's scale-up and technology businesses, the appointment usually follows the point where founders can no longer arbitrate every product decision.
The trigger
When founders and boards hire a Product
Product decisions are made in three places at once
Sales promises it, engineering builds something adjacent, the founder changes it on Friday. Ownership is the missing piece.
The roadmap is a list of customer requests
Every item is defensible and the sum of them is not a strategy.
Pricing and packaging have not kept up
The product has changed considerably and what you charge for it has not. That is a product leadership problem before it is a commercial one.
Engineering capacity is being spent badly
The team is delivering and nothing is moving. Usually the wrong things are being built well.
The assessment
What a strong Product appointment looks like
- 01
Understands customers, technology and economics in equal measure. Two out of three produces a familiar kind of failure.
- 02
Knows when to listen and when to make the call. Consensus is not a product strategy.
- 03
Has said no to a large customer and can explain the reasoning without flinching.
- 04
Works well with engineering leadership rather than negotiating with it through the founder.
- 05
Can describe a feature they killed and what it saved.

The Queensland market
What we see in the Product market here
Brisbane's product community is small, well connected and mostly employed. Nearly every appointment we make here is by approach and by reference rather than through an advertisement.
The most common miss is hiring product management process into a business that needs product judgement. Frameworks are easy to import. Deciding what not to build under commercial pressure is the part that takes scars.
Where a business is under about thirty people, a hands-on Head of Product almost always outperforms a Chief Product Officer title, and costs less to get right.
Questions we are asked
Product hiring questions, answered
If the work is running discovery, owning the roadmap and shipping alongside engineering, hire a hands-on Head of Product. A Chief Product Officer makes sense when product owns pricing, packaging and a commercial number at the executive table. Over-titling this role attracts candidates who will not do the daily work.
To the CEO in almost every case. Product reporting into engineering tends to turn the roadmap into a delivery plan, and the customer and commercial voice quietly disappears from the executive conversation.
Our South East Queensland data shows Head of Product packages between $180,000 and $240,000, Chief Product Officer appointments between $260,000 and $350,000, and $280,000 to $380,000 in venture or private equity-backed businesses where equity forms part of the structure.
We ask what they killed, what they charged, and what they got wrong. Roadmaps and frameworks are easy to present. Evidence of hard commercial choices made under pressure, and honesty about the ones that did not work, separates the field quickly.
