Data Leadership Search
Data Leadership Search, Brisbane and South East Queensland
Data leadership is the least glamorous appointment a mid-market business makes and the one that pays back most reliably. Nobody has ever been congratulated at a board dinner for fixing the reporting layer. It is still the right hire.
What a Data Leadership does in a mid-market business
A data leader owns how a business collects, governs and uses its data: the reporting layer, the data platform, governance and the analytics team. In founder-led and private equity-backed businesses, this is usually a Head of Data or Chief Data Officer appointed when reporting can no longer be trusted.
The trigger
When founders and boards hire a Data
Two reports give two answers
The moment the leadership team argues about whose number is right rather than what the number means, the business needs a data owner.
An investor wants a monthly pack they can rely on
Private equity ownership raises the reporting bar immediately. Most businesses underestimate by how much.
AI is on the agenda
Every serious AI programme is a data programme first. Hiring the data leader before the AI leader saves both money and eighteen months.
Acquisitions have fragmented the truth
Multiple entities, multiple systems, no consolidated view. Common across Queensland's acquisitive family businesses.
The assessment
What a strong Data appointment looks like
- 01
Has built a reporting layer the executive team actually opened every Monday, and can say why they opened it.
- 02
Understands governance as an enabler rather than a compliance exercise.
- 03
Has worked with a finance function closely enough to be trusted by the CFO.
- 04
Can build pragmatically. Mid-market data leadership rewards the person who ships a warehouse in ninety days over the one who designs the perfect one in nine months.
- 05
Recruits and retains analysts, who are among the hardest people to keep in the Brisbane market.

The Queensland market
What we see in the Data market here
Data is the discipline where Brisbane businesses most often over-specify. Put a Chief Data Officer title on a role that needs a hands-on Head of Data and you will attract the wrong field, take twice as long, and pay more for the privilege.
There is real depth in this market inside Queensland's resources, financial services and government sectors. Those leaders often want out and are attracted to smaller businesses where the work is visible.
The retention risk sits below the leader. Good data leaders are usually available for longer than good senior analysts, so we advise clients to plan the team, not just the appointment.
Questions we are asked
Data hiring questions, answered
When reporting stops being trusted, when an investor raises the reporting bar, or when an AI programme is being considered. In practice most Queensland mid-market businesses reach this point between 100 and 250 employees, and most reach it about a year later than they should have.
A Head of Data builds and runs the platform and the team, and is usually hands-on. A Chief Data Officer sits at the executive table with governance, risk and strategy accountability and is usually not. Titling a hands-on role as CDO attracts the wrong field, which is the most common mistake we correct in this discipline.
Our Queensland data shows Head of Data packages between $190,000 and $250,000, Chief Data Officer appointments between $260,000 and $340,000, and $280,000 to $360,000 in private equity-backed businesses where reporting quality underpins the investment thesis.
Almost always, yes. Every AI programme we have seen succeed in the mid-market was preceded by a usable data foundation. Businesses that reverse the order typically spend the AI leader's first year and salary building what a data leader would have built for less.
