AI Leadership Search
AI Leadership Search, Brisbane and South East Queensland
Every board in Queensland has asked the same question in the last eighteen months. Plenty of businesses answered it by appointing someone. Rather fewer answered it by working out what they needed first, which is the cheaper order to do it in.
What a AI Leadership does in a mid-market business
An AI leader owns how a business applies artificial intelligence commercially: use case selection, data readiness, model governance and adoption. In Queensland's mid-market, this is more often a Head of AI or an existing CIO or CTO with an expanded remit than a standalone Chief AI Officer.
The trigger
When founders and boards hire a AI
Pilots are multiplying and nothing is in production
The clearest signal that the business has capability but no ownership. Someone needs to decide what gets killed.
Customers are asking what your AI position is
In technology-enabled businesses this has moved from a curiosity to a procurement question. It now affects revenue.
The board wants governance before it wants capability
Directors are increasingly asking about model risk, data provenance and staff use of public tools. That is a leadership appointment.
There is a genuine product opportunity
Not efficiency. Product. If AI could change what you sell rather than how you operate, the appointment justifies itself quickly.
The assessment
What a strong AI appointment looks like
- 01
Has put something into production that a customer paid for, and can talk about what it cost to run.
- 02
Starts with the commercial problem and the data, not the model.
- 03
Is honest about what will not work. The best AI leaders we meet spend most of their time saying no.
- 04
Can carry both the board conversation and the engineering conversation without changing their story between rooms.
- 05
Has managed the workforce side of adoption, which is where most programmes actually stall.

The Queensland market
What we see in the AI market here
The market is full of people who have used AI tools and considerably fewer who have shipped and run AI in a commercial setting. Telling those two groups apart is most of the job in this discipline, and a polished deck is no help at all.
For most mid-market Queensland businesses we advise against a standalone Chief AI Officer as a first move. Expanding the CIO or CTO remit, and appointing a strong Head of AI or Head of Data underneath, produces better outcomes at this size and is materially easier to hire for.
Where a standalone AI executive does make sense is where AI is genuinely in the product and the business is selling it. That is a different search with a much smaller pool, often requiring interstate or international reach.
Questions we are asked
AI hiring questions, answered
Most mid-market businesses need capability first and a leader second. If you have no clean data spine, an AI executive will spend their first year building one, which is a Head of Data search at a lower cost. Appoint an AI leader when the use cases are commercial, the data is usable, and the constraint is genuinely decision-making rather than skill.
In businesses using AI internally, it belongs with the CIO. In businesses selling AI in the product, it belongs with the CTO. Reporting directly to the CEO makes sense only where AI is a stated strategic pillar with its own P&L consequence, which is rarer than the market suggests.
Our Queensland data shows Head of AI packages between $210,000 and $280,000, standalone Chief AI Officer roles between $300,000 and $420,000 where AI sits in the product, and fractional engagements at $2,000 to $3,000 per day.
We assess against production evidence rather than vocabulary. What did you ship, who paid for it, what did inference cost, what did you decommission, and what did you refuse to build. Those five questions separate the field faster than any technical screen.
