Engineering Leadership Search
Engineering Leadership Search, Brisbane and South East Queensland
Engineering leadership is where growth either compounds or quietly stalls. The team can be strong, the product can be right, and the business can still miss its year because nobody was actually running delivery. That one is rarely anybody's fault until it is everybody's problem.
What a Engineering Leadership does in a mid-market business
Engineering leadership covers VP Engineering, Head of Engineering and Director of Engineering roles: the people accountable for delivery pace, team performance, hiring and engineering quality. In Brisbane scale-ups, this appointment usually follows the CTO by twelve to twenty-four months.
The trigger
When founders and boards hire a Engineering
The CTO is spending their week in stand-ups
When technical strategy is being crowded out by delivery management, the business has outgrown a single technology leader.
Team size has passed twenty engineers
Somewhere between twenty and forty people, informal coordination stops working and the cost shows up as missed dates.
Attrition has started
Engineers usually leave managers, not companies. In a tight Brisbane market that is an expensive way to learn.
Hardware, firmware or multi-discipline teams are involved
Electrical, mechanical, firmware and test leadership is a distinct and much smaller market in Queensland, and it needs a different search.
The assessment
What a strong Engineering appointment looks like
- 01
Has grown a team through the headcount band you are entering and can describe what broke at each step.
- 02
Measures delivery honestly and does not hide behind velocity metrics.
- 03
Has fired someone well. Leadership in engineering is tested on the hard conversations.
- 04
Retains people. Ask any candidate who has followed them between companies, and why.
- 05
Partners with product rather than negotiating with it.

The Queensland market
What we see in the Engineering market here
Brisbane's engineering leadership market is genuinely competitive at the senior end and improving fast at the mid level. The businesses that hire well here move quickly and decide before they meet the field, not after.
Hardware and multi-discipline engineering leadership is a different market again. The Queensland and Gold Coast pool is small, and most of our successful appointments in that space have involved either interstate relocation or leaders returning to Australia.
Remote and hybrid expectations remain the most common deal-breaker in this discipline. Businesses that insist on five days in the office are competing for a smaller field, which is a fine decision to make as long as it is priced accordingly.
Questions we are asked
Engineering hiring questions, answered
Usually when the engineering team passes twenty to twenty-five people, or when the CTO's week has been consumed by delivery management. The appointment buys back technical strategy at the top and delivery discipline in the middle, and the return on it is normally visible within two quarters.
If the constraint is throughput, hire engineers. If the constraint is predictability, coordination or retention, hire the leader. Adding engineers to a coordination problem reliably makes it worse, and it is the most expensive mistake we see scale-ups make in this discipline.
Our Queensland data shows Head of Engineering packages between $200,000 and $250,000, VP Engineering between $250,000 and $320,000, and $280,000 to $360,000 in private equity-backed businesses. VP Hardware Engineering sits between $240,000 and $300,000 with a materially smaller candidate pool.
Yes, and it is a search we run regularly across the Gold Coast and Brisbane. The pool is small enough that we work it by name rather than by advertisement, and interstate or returning-expatriate candidates form part of most shortlists.
