CDO Executive Search

Chief Data and Digital Officer Search, Brisbane and South East Queensland

You normally need a CDO when the business has plenty of data and nobody really trusts it, owns it, or knows what to do with it. The instinct is to hire the most technical person available. The need is usually someone who can get an organisation making better decisions.

What a Chief Digital Officer does in a mid-market business

A Chief Digital Officer, or Chief Data Officer, owns how a business uses its data and digital capability to make better commercial decisions: ownership, trust, governance, automation and increasingly the data foundation that AI depends on. In mid-market Queensland businesses the appointment usually follows years of accumulated data nobody relies on.

    The trigger

When founders and boards hire a CDO

Everyone has data and nobody has answers

Reports exist, dashboards exist, and the leadership team still argues about whose number is right before it discusses what to do.

No one owns the decision layer

Data sits inside finance, operations and marketing, each with its own version. Ownership is the gap, not tooling.

AI and automation are on the agenda

If the remit cannot explain how data enables AI, automation and better commercial decisions, the remit is drawn too narrowly.

Digital has become how customers experience the business

Once the channel is the product, the CDO conversation moves from back office to board table.

    The assessment

What a strong CDO appointment looks like

    • 01

Translates as well as they build. The best ones are translators as much as technologists.

    • 02

Starts with the decisions the business needs to make, then works backwards to the data.

    • 03

Has changed how an executive team operates, not just what it can see.

    • 04

Understands governance as a way of making data trustworthy rather than a compliance chore.

    • 05

Can be honest about what a platform will not fix, which is usually the culture around it.

    The Queensland market

What we see in the CDO market here

Queensland has real depth in technical data leadership, largely out of resources, financial services and government. The scarcity is in people who can sit with a founder and change how the business decides things.

Titles cause more damage here than in any other discipline. Advertise a Chief Digital Officer role that is really a hands-on Head of Data and you will attract a field that will not do the work.

We are increasingly asked to fold AI accountability into this appointment. In businesses under about 300 people that is usually right, and cheaper than two executives who then negotiate over the same territory.

    Questions we are asked

    CDO hiring questions, answered

A CIO owns the systems the business runs on. A Chief Digital Officer owns how data and digital capability change what the business can decide and sell. In smaller organisations the two remits are frequently held by one person, and separating them before the business is around 300 people usually creates friction rather than clarity.

If the work is building the platform and the reporting layer, hire a hands-on Head of Data. If the work is getting the organisation to trust and use information it already has, that is an executive appointment. Most businesses need the first and advertise the second.

In most mid-market businesses, yes. AI adoption fails on data quality far more often than on model capability, so putting both under one accountable executive tends to produce faster results than appointing a separate AI leader who inherits an unusable foundation.

Our South East Queensland data shows executive appointments between $260,000 and $340,000, rising to $290,000 to $370,000 in private equity-backed businesses. Head of Digital and Head of Data roles sit between $190,000 and $250,000.
