Your Experience Means Nothing If They Don't Like You

Candidates often think the scorecard is obvious. More experience, better qualifications, a cleaner track record. The person who checks the most boxes wins. They are wrong.

    The awkward truth

You can be more qualified, more experienced and better on paper. And still lose the role.

We see it all the time. The technically stronger candidate gets passed over for someone with slightly less experience because the chemistry is different. The employer trusts them more. They communicate clearly. They read the room. The hiring manager can picture them in the team on a hard Tuesday.

Hiring is not a spreadsheet. It is a decision about who you will sit next to, rely on, and answer for. Capability gets you into the conversation. Likeability, respect and trust get you the offer.

Candidate competitiveness is more than the interview

This is not about being everyone's best friend. It is not about performing enthusiasm or mirroring the interviewer. Real candidate competitiveness is the ability to make people want to work with you.

It shows up in how you listen, how you answer the question that was actually asked, how you handle a curveball without getting defensive. It shows up in whether you treat the EA, the recruiter and the receptionist the same way you treat the CEO.

The people who get this right are not always the loudest in the room. Often they are the easiest to be in the room with.

    Reputation compounds

If you move through your career building good relationships, treating people properly and leaving very few burned bridges behind you, something interesting happens. You do not have to chase money as aggressively. Eventually, opportunity and money start chasing you.

Your reputation compounds. The executive who is known as capable and decent gets called before the job is ever posted. The one who is only known as capable gets forgotten the moment a better-connected candidate appears.

    The real interview question

Next time you walk into an interview, remember: you are not just proving you can do the job. You are giving someone a reason to want to do it with you.

Sometimes the click is there. Sometimes it is not. Chemistry cannot be manufactured. And no amount of experience on your CV can replace it.
